Speaking of ritual...
(Looks at the clock) In 45 minutes, it will be Greek Orthodox Easter. Yes, it's a week after the generally accepted date of Easter. There is some wierd calculation they use to determine the date based on the Gregorian calendar, it probably involves calculus and some old dude with a dog eared copy of the Da Vinci code and a slide rule. However, the Greeks have to be different. They use the Julian calendar, some astronomy involving Jerusalem, another old dude with an equally worn copy of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," some baklava, and some ouzo. There's probably some divinatory Greek dancing done as well. Dunno. But anyways, we're late his year.
My family's normal tradition would have been to stay up tonight, have a midnite easter egg hunt, shoot off fireworks while listening cautiously to a police scanner for our address, then at midnight, tap some red dyed eggs together, while saying "Christos Anesti" (Christ has risen), and answer "Alithos Anesti!" (Truly he has risen). The Sidhe also does the blessing of the doors with a candle brought back from church. Yep, the magick user does the blessing, with a little warding done for good measure.
This year, not so much. Due to family issues, and the fact that we're all too damn tired to stay up, we're doing it on Sunday this year.
So, I was baking spanakopita and sent JP off for phyllo. And something struck me. Maybe it's because I was thinking of my family and especially my Papou. (I miss you SOOOO much! I love you!)
I lit some frankincense and myrrh incense. I put one in front of the Buddha statue, and one in front of my Papou's picture. I put on the CD of the Greek Orthodox liturgy. (Yep, I have one.) I stood in front of my altar and I did some prosperity and family health magick. I put out some energy for the emotional well being and financial health of my big fat Greek family. And it was good. I could feel my Papou with me. I will admit to having a good cry. And it was good.
